Chapter Twelve
The library in Hadley Manor was a treasure trove of ancient tomes, filled with the scent of old leather and ink. I stood flanked by my cousins, Georgia and Samantha, as we practiced our magical abilities while the three authors staying at the manor were out for a beach picnic. The soft glow of enchanted candles floated above our heads, casting flickering shadows across the room. I focused on my breathing, mentally preparing myself for the task at hand.
"Okay," I said, rubbing my hands together. "Let's try levitating that quill." I pointed to an elegant feather quill resting on a nearby table.
"Piece of cake," Georgia declared. She extended her hand, palm facing the quill, and it began to rise into the air. I watched in awe, feeling both pride and envy at her natural talent.
"Your turn, Phoebe," Samantha encouraged me. Her confidence shone through even when practicing witchcraft. I hesitated for a moment before raising my hand toward the quill.
"Okay," I murmured, taking a deep breath. "Here goes nothing." I willed the quill to float towards me, my heart pounding in my chest. It trembled slightly, then lifted off the table, hovering in mid-air. A surge of excitement coursed through me; I had done it.
"See? You're getting the hang of it!" Samantha grinned, clapping me on the back. "We just need more practice."
"Speaking of practice," Georgia chimed in, "we should probably talk about our family history. Nellie always said we needed to be aware of our roots to fully understand our powers."
"Good idea," Samantha agreed. "Why don't you start, Phoebe? You've been doing some research lately, haven't you?"
"Um, sure," I said. My newfound interest in our ancestry was a result of my ever-growing curiosity. "Well, the Hadley witches have been around for centuries. We're descendants of some powerful women who practiced magic in secret. They believed in using their powers for good and taught their children to do the same."
"Right," Georgia added, "and over time, our ancestors bought this island as a place where they had assured privacy to practice. My grandmother, Nellie, built the manor and lived here for decades, and as far as I can tell, never practiced magic. But when she left it to us, she wanted us to create a community that was a safe haven for witches and other mystics, a place where they could learn and grow without fear." Her longing for success as an author was clear in the way she told the story with such passion. I couldn't imagine why Georgia believed she didn't have the talent to write.
"Exactly," I nodded. "And now it's our responsibility to carry on their legacy, to protect this island and its magical community. But we can't do it alone; we need each other. Our bond as cousins and witches is what makes us strong."
"Phoebe's right," Samantha said, her eyes filled with determination.
"Absolutely," Georgia agreed, placing her hand on mine. "We're family. And nothing can break the bond between sisters of the craft."
âHow is everyone coming with Joeâs suspects?â Samantha asked.
